What Hair Oil Is For

Oil sits on the outside of the hair. It coats the cuticle, fills in the places where the surface has lifted, and gives light something smooth to bounce off, which is why oiled hair reads shinier and feels softer between your fingers.

That surface layer also cuts friction. Hair that slides past itself tangles less and looks less frizzy by the end of the day.

Where you put it decides what it does. Oil on the scalp before a wash behaves differently from a few drops smoothed through dry ends.

Pre-Wash or Leave-In

A pre-wash oil goes on the scalp and lengths before you shampoo, sits for anywhere from twenty minutes to overnight, and washes out. Nothing is left behind, so it suits fine hair and anyone who finds oil heavy.

A leave-in oil or serum goes on after washing, on damp or dry hair, and stays. Use far less than you think. Two or three drops warmed between your palms covers mid-lengths and ends on most hair.

Roots are the place to be careful either way. Scalp oil belongs on the scalp before a wash, not on clean roots you want to keep looking fresh.

Find Your Oil

Pre-wash scalp oil

The Pre-Wash Scalp Oil with Rosemary & Biotin is the one to use before shampoo, worked into the scalp and left to sit. Also in a 3-pack.

Pure castor oil

100% Castor Oil is a single ingredient and a thick one, which makes it the heaviest option here. A little goes on the scalp or the very ends. The 3-pack is the value size.

Not sure where to start

The Mini Scalp Hair Oil Sampler lets you try the formulas in small sizes before committing to a full bottle.

Shine on dry hair

Glass Hair Shine Serum is the finishing step rather than a treatment. A couple of drops on dry mid-lengths and ends, after styling.

Getting it onto the scalp

The Scalp Oil Applicator has a nozzle that parts hair and puts the oil where you aim it, instead of on the hair above it. Also sold with the rosemary and biotin oil.

How to Apply It Without Greasy Roots

Part dry hair in rows and apply along the parting, a few drops at a time. Massage with your fingertips for a minute or two so it spreads across the scalp rather than sitting in lines.

Twenty minutes is enough for most people. Overnight works too if you wrap your hair, though it does mean washing a pillowcase as well as your hair.

Shampoo twice. One wash lifts the oil off, the second actually cleans. Shampooing dry hair before the water goes on makes the first pass more effective.

For the leave-in oils, start with two drops on your ends and add more only if the hair drinks it. Going straight to a palmful is how oil ends up looking greasy instead of glossy.

What Oil Can and Cannot Do

Oil changes the surface of the hair you already have. Shine, slip, softness and the look of frizz are all surface properties, and oil is good at all four.

It does not reach inside the strand and it does not change what is happening under the scalp. We will point you at the research on individual ingredients rather than make promises on their behalf.

What the evidence shows on rosemary and biotin and what realistically changes with length retention are both worth reading before you buy anything in this category, ours included.

Building It Into a Routine

Pre-wash oil goes first, then shampoo and conditioner, then a leave-in or a serum on damp hair. Hair treatments and masks sit in the same slot as the pre-wash step.

If buildup or an oily scalp is the thing you are actually dealing with, start at scalp care rather than here. Adding oil to a scalp that already feels coated is the wrong order of operations.

Overnight, a satin pillowcase keeps the oil on your hair rather than on the bed.

Hair Oil FAQs

Should I put hair oil on wet or dry hair?

Pre-wash oils go on dry hair before you shampoo. Leave-in oils and serums go on damp hair after washing, or on dry hair as a finishing step. Both work, but not interchangeably.

How long should I leave a pre-wash oil on?

Twenty minutes covers it. Overnight is an option if you wrap your hair, and it will not do more than a long soak does.

How do I wash hair oil out?

Shampoo twice. Apply the first shampoo to dry or barely damp oiled hair, work it through, then rinse and wash again properly.

Will hair oil make my hair greasy?

Only if you use too much or put it in the wrong place. Two or three drops on mid-lengths and ends is the normal amount for a leave-in, and roots are the one place to skip.

What does castor oil do for hair?

It is a thick, single-ingredient oil that coats heavily, which makes it a good choice for coarse hair and ends, and a poor one for fine hair that goes flat easily. 100% Castor Oil

Does rosemary oil grow hair?

There is research on rosemary and it is more interesting than most ingredient research in this category, but it is not settled and we are not going to tell you it is. Here is what the evidence actually shows

Do I need the applicator?

Not strictly, but it saves the oil from landing on the hair instead of the scalp, which is the whole point of a pre-wash step. Scalp Oil Applicator

How often should I oil my hair?

Once a week suits most people for a pre-wash treatment. Leave-in serums can be daily, since the amount is so much smaller.
