Scrunchie or Hair Tie? How to Choose

The two do genuinely different jobs, and knowing which one you need saves you a lot of trial and error.

A scrunchie is fabric gathered over an elastic core. Because the fabric spreads the tension across a wider surface, it holds without concentrating pressure in one thin line, which is why it does not leave a crease and why it is the comfortable choice for a bun, a half up, or sleeping. The tradeoff is bulk. A scrunchie sits high and visible.

A hair tie or elastic is low profile and grips tighter. It disappears under a helmet, holds through a workout, and is what you want at the base of a braid. The tradeoff is that a thin band under tension is where dents and snags come from, which is why the construction matters: our elastics are seamless or ribbon-wrapped, with no metal crimp.

Satin Scrunchies, and Why Satin and Not Silk

Satin is a weave, not a fiber. That matters, because the thing doing the work is the surface: a satin weave is smooth, so hair slides across it instead of catching. Less friction means fewer snags, less frizz lifting off the surface, and less of the visible roughing up you get from a cotton or terry band.

Silk gets you a similarly smooth surface at roughly three times the price, and it is usually hand wash only. Our scrunchies are satin, not silk. Same smooth surface, machine washable, and you can buy five of them for the price of one silk one. We would rather say that plainly than blur the label.

Find Yours by Hair Type

Thick, long, or coarse hair. You need circumference and a strong core. Look at oversized scrunchies and Pillow Scrunchies®, which wrap two or three times on most thick ponytails instead of stretching to their limit on one pass. A tie stretched to its limit is the one that slips. For a lower-profile hold, the Thick Hair Nylon Elastics are sized for the same ponytail.

Fine or thin hair. Oversized styles will slide right out. Ultra Petite Satin Scrunchies and Satin Petite sets are scaled down so they can wrap enough times to actually hold, and they sit neatly on a smaller ponytail instead of swallowing it.

Curly and coily, 3a through 4c. Satin is the material to look for, along with no metal join and no rough seam to catch on a curl pattern. Ruched satin and sleep scrunchies are the two most popular picks here, and the rest of our curly and coily range is worth a look while you are at it.

Straight or slippery hair. Smooth satin can slide on very straight hair. Textured, ribbed, crepe, and ruffle styles give you something to grip with.

Scrunchies for Sleep

Sleeping with your hair down is how you wake up with a nest at the nape of your neck. Sleeping with it in a tight elastic is how you wake up with a dent.

Our sleep scrunchies sit between the two: soft satin, loose enough to wear for eight hours without pressure, structured enough to keep a loose bun or a pineapple in place overnight. Do scrunchies damage your hair?
A scrunchie is one of the gentler ways to tie hair up. Fabric over elastic spreads tension across a wider band instead of biting into one thin line, and there is no metal crimp to catch on. The bigger variables are how tight you pull it and how often you tie in the same spot, so keep it loose and move your part around.

What is the difference between satin and silk scrunchies?
Silk is a fiber, satin is a weave. Both give you a smooth, low friction surface. Satin costs a fraction of silk and is machine washable, which is why our line is satin.

Which scrunchie is best for thick hair?
Oversized styles and Pillow Scrunchies®. You want one that can wrap more than once without stretching to its limit, because a fully stretched tie is the one that slides out by lunchtime.

Can you sleep in a scrunchie?
Yes, and our sleep styles are made for exactly that. Use a loose bun rather than a tight ponytail, and choose satin so your hair is not rubbing against a textured band all night.

How do you wash scrunchies?
Put them in a mesh laundry bag, run them on a cold gentle cycle, and lay them flat to air dry. Skip the dryer, which is what breaks down the elastic core over time.
